What is BPH?
The prostate is a gland that surrounds the urethra, the tube that drains urine from the body.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common non-cancerous condition in older men that causes the prostate to enlarge as men age. When the enlarged prostate presses on the urethra, it can cause bothersome urinary symptoms.
- Frequent need to urinate (especially at night)
- Straining or difficulty passing urine
- Weak urine flow (stopping and starting)
- Sudden urgent need to urinate
- Blood in the urine (this is less common)
